All of the currently available LS powders have a rather large particle size distribution with an average particle size of around 50-55 micron but a range from 20-125/150 micron…. Even with 100 micron layers there is a significant portion of material above the layer thickness. If you try to go to a smaller layer thickness you end up with a shear force from the powder being added interacting with the molten surface of the previous layer causing the previous layer to shift position. Going to a smaller average particle size is possible but then you decrease the bed density and the material can become airborne much more easily.
