Dear List:

In the year 2000, my computer-rendered proposal for a Three-Dimensional
Zoetrope of the Torus-to-Costa's Minimal Surface Metamorphosis won an
International Award in Digital Sculpture
<http://www.intersculpt.org/is_99/dsc99/dsc99-comp.htm> at the French
Senate in Paris.

At this time, two sets of the sculptures for this animation were
constructed: One set at the PRISM Center, Institute for Studies in the
Arts and Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science at
Arizona State University; and
a second set was constructed, somewhat later, by André-Luc ALLANIC of
Optoform SARL, France.

I have since learned that Optoform was acquired by 3D Systems,

but that M. Dr. ALLANIC has continued to publish innovations in Rapid
Prototyping as of
November 9, 2004
<http://www.patentstorm.us/patents-by-date/2004/1109-1.html>, with
co-inventor Mark Chung
<http://www.patentstorm.us/inventors/Mark_Chung-1344100.html> and
assigning to 3D Systems, Inc.

I have recently been awarded a Daniel Delavergne Media Arts Advantage Fund Grant <http://www.themap.org/content/view/79> from the Western North Carolina Media Arts Project <http://www.themap.org>
http://www.themap.org/content/view/79 to complete a second edition of the Zoetrope, the proposal for which was published in LEONARDO <http://mitpress2.mit.edu/e-journals/Leonardo/leoinfo.html>, the Journal of the ISAST <http://mitpress2.mit.edu/e-journals/Leonardo/isast/isastinfo.html> (International Society of Arts, Science and Technology), Volume 36, Issue 3 (June 2003).

I am taking this opportunity to also complete the cabinet for the Torus-to-Costa's Minimal Surface, the sculptures for which M. Dr. ALLANIC constructed in 2000. Please see the in-progress, photographic construction documentation on this project at: http://emsh.calarts.edu/~mathart/ZoeConstruct_2006/ZoeConstruct_2006_proofsheet.html

I hope that M. Dr. ALLANIC will be pleased with the progress.

Sincerely,

-Stewart Dickson, Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, UNC-Asheville
