The challenge facing tooling houses worldwide is that of achieving and maintaining a competitive edge. This has become ever increasing as Manufacturing Sectors are major contributors to economic development. An acute awareness of competitive strategies is important in meeting the demands of modern tooling design as new and old technologies are integrated to innovatively advance technology and ultimately meet different customer needs.

The 2006, 7th Annual International RAPDASA Conference on Competitive Tooling, will provide an essential platform where key stakeholders in the tooling industry can share, debate and strategise around both local and international technological innovations. This platform will also provide an opportunity for participants to look at ways in which to promote a competitive edge and enhance economic growth.

This conference is well aligned with the South African Government’s Department of Trade and Industry strategy, i.e., the National Research and Development Strategy (NRDS), that recognizes that South Africa’s future competitiveness will depend on the capacity of the manufacturing sector to master advanced technology domains, to innovate and meet the precise needs of customers.

Workshops

01 November 2006 will be devoted to workshops that will expose participants to industry needs and give them the opportunity to share in the expertise of technology leaders. These workshops will be presented at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville Campus followed by a traditional Cape Town lunch. Delegates will then be taken on a tour of the Institution’s research facilities.

Conference

On 01 November 2006 at 15h30 all delegates will be transported from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology to the conference venue, Club Mykonos, by three luxury air-conditioned coaches. Delegates that will not attend the workshops should inform the conference secretariat in order to arrange pick-up at the Cape Town International Airport, or make their way to CPUT before 15h00.

Secure parking arrangements will be made for delegates coming to CPUT with their own transport. Vehicles can be left at the CPUT for the entire Conference period.

Upon arrival at Club Mykynos, delegates will be allowed to check-in to their rooms and at 19h30 the delegates will meet informally at a cocktail reception that will include a Luxury Cruise around the marina. The conference will take place on Thursday, 02/11/06 and Friday, 03/11/06. On each day the proceedings will start with keynote presentations, followed by papers presented by delegates. On the evening of Thursday, 02/11/06 delegates will be able to interact socially at the conference dinner, which promises to be quite a special experience.

Keynote Speakers

Keynote presentations will be presented by leading players in the national and international tooling industry, leaders in the development of the local strategy, the Department of Trade and Industry and an international expert in the development of Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing technologies and applications. Thus far we have one confirmed keynote presenter, Dr. Terry Wohlers, President of Wohlers Associates Inc. and Honorary Member of RAPDASA. Further information regarding keynote presenters and lectures will follow in the 2nd Call for papers.
