A section on RP/SFF Activities at Universities is being prepared for the
2006 Wohlers Report <http://wohlersassociates.com/> and I am seeking
input from those Universities involved in RP and SFF. This is a great
opportunity to share a brief summary of your University's research and
educational activities related to RP/SFF. Please share, we all want to
know what's happening at your university.

Examples from the 2005 report...

 

Clemson University: The university is focusing on three areas of
research:
1) improved surface properties for rapid tooling, 2) multi-material
design and manufacture, and 3) tissue manufacturing. Several machines
for additive fabrication are currently available to students in
mechanical engineering and architecture, as well as to local businesses.
They include an Actua system, three 3D printers from Z Corp., an FDM
system, and a ProMetal machine. For research, the university is running
an Ultrasonic Consolidation system from Solidica, a ProMetal system, and
two hybrid machines for the production of living tissue. Contact:

Queen's University (Canada): A Rapid Laminated Tooling Lab at the
university has been in operation since 2000. The research focuses on the
development of a lamination process for the rapid fabrication of
production tooling from sheet metal. Developments include the design and
fabrication of a small steel injection mold insert that has undergone
successful trials in a 20-ton injection-molding press. Current work
focuses on mechanical modeling of the steel laminates. Contact: Gene Zak

 

Helsinki University of Technology (Finland): The main research
activities are in the area of materials used for Incremental Sheet Metal
Forming. The university has developed a robot cell for research purposes
and studied sheet metal material behavior during the forming process. As
a part of an applied research project, researchers have developed a cost
model to evaluate rapid manufacturing economics and to re-engineer
business processes. The model includes both qualitative and quantitative
tools. The methodology can be used in companies that are evaluating
