This application of a 3D printer appears to be a real overkill. All that was needed to determine the caliber and type of the bullet within the horse was a simple DICOM viewer. However, the program did provide some interesting possibilities for the application of 3D printers for forensics. All that is needed is a higher resolution CT or MRI scanner and a high resolution RP system (e.g., 3D Systems high resolution Invision). One of the characters wanted to look at a bullet that was in a horse
. He wanted to know the caliber of the bullet so he could find the weapon that fired it. Apparently he had an MRI image which he used to produce a model on what he called a "Z Printer". Since I am blind, I couldn't be sure, but I am guessing that he was portrayed using a Z Corp machine. Of course the model didn't have the microscopic details of the actual bullet, but it helped the investigation, and eventually the real bullet was retrieved from the horse. I wonder if we will see more RP machines in programs.Regards,Robert Jaquiss>>Hi Robert:Yep - it was a Z Corp. product. I got a news release from them, but missed the show. m Puts 3D Printing in the MainstreamBurlington, Mass. - November 29, 2004 - Z Corporation today announced that the CBS television network will feature one of the company's 3D printers in an upcoming episode of CSI: NY, the popular television crime drama about forensic investigators who use high-tech science to solve crimes in New York City. The episode, which is scheduled to air Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 10 p.m. (EST), on CBS, will utilize Z Corp.'s 3D printing system as a plot device and prop to support one of the show's uniquely creative story lines.According to Deb Cole, Associate Producer at CSI: NY, staff writers became enamored with 3D printing technology, which produces accurate physical replicas of computer models quickly and inexpensively, and decided to use a 3D printer for this particular episode. "We were looking for a story line for which we could use a 3D printer because the technology is just fantastic and provides strong visuals, which are an important part of the show," Cole explains. "As soon as
the script we developed called for the use of the 3D printer, we contacted Z Corporation, which provided the system for use in this episode. Depending on the response we receive, we may continue to use the 3D printer in upcoming episodes as a standard tool in our crime scene investigators' high-tech bag of tricks."Marina Hatsopoulos, Z Corporation Chief Executive Officer, says that while manufacturers have traditionally used 3D printing technology for rapid prototyping purposes to support new product development, she expects mainstream applications, such as the use of a 3D printer on CSI: NY, to continue to grow. "We have always envisioned that 3D printing technology would eventually cross over into the mainstream," Hatsopoulos notes. "Unlike other engineering technologies that are primarily technical in nature and application, 3D printing holds great promise for broader market, mainstream adoption and use. We are excited to be a part of such a popular entertainment vehicle as CSI: NY, and expect continued
deve
lopment of other less traditional applications. As the 3D printing technology continues to advance, the magic of producing actual physical objects from computer models quickly and affordably will spread into other fields and endeavors that are difficult to imagine today."The Z Corp. 3D Printer creates physical models directly from digital data in hours instead of days. The System is fast, versatile and simple, enabling the production of a range of concept models and functional test parts quickly and inexpensively. The system is ideal for an office environment or educational institution. The ZPrinter 310 System's sleek design and straightforward user interface make it the ideal entry-level 3D printing system.About CSI: NYThe CBS Television series CSI: NY stars Academy Award-nominee, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise and Emmy Award-nominee Melina Kanakaredes in a crime drama about forensic investigators who use science to follow the evidence and solve crimes in The Big Apple.About Z CorporationZ
