Is there a service out there where I could send a simple photo of an
ornamental piece without undercuts and get a 3D surface model?

If so who?

Juha is correct. About 10 years ago, as I recall, I received a phone call
from a guy in the beef industry located in Iowa. His organization wanted to
scan live cattle to determine growth patterns from the use of different
feeds, etc. I found it to be an odd but interesting request. I do not know
whether he found a suitable scanning solution.

Best wishes for a successful 2003 to everyone on this list.

Hmm...If I remember this right it was back in 1998 in Espoo, Finland
when Terry Wohlers talked about a smiliar problem - scanning a cow. If
I'm not wrong someone wanted to get information about the growth of cow,
so they wanted to scan cows of different ages. I don't know if they ever
found a solution, but if I'm not totally wrong above, maybe Terry knows?
