Worldwide Guide to Rapid Prototyping Web Site Update

Greetings:

We've just completed a major update of "Mom" the Mother of All RP
Bibliographies. With the addition of another 500+ mostly recent citations,
the total number of references in the database now stands at nearly 4,500.
The range of subjects in the recent material is extraordinary. It
illustrates that RP has a future which is likely to permeate not only nearly
every technical field, but many aspects of our private lives, as well.

I thought it would be fun for the curious to see some selected 2002 titles
from the update and a little blurb from the abstract to get just a taste of
what's going on all over the world. That material is attached below. To
find out more about a particular paper, simply cut and paste the title into
the BIBLIOGRAPHY search function on our site, located at:

http://home.att.net/~edgrenda/index.htm

We'll soon also be including hundreds of references to articles from The
North American Edition of Time Compression Technologies Magazine by
arrangement with the publisher, Communication Technologies, Inc. This trade
magazine is an excellent source of industry news, case studies and tutorial
material and we expect to complete the work in the next month, or so.

======= A Few 2002 Titles ==============

* Manufacturing

RAPID PROTOTYPING TAKES ON MANUFACTURING:
"... stereolithography techniques are now creating models of such high
quality and reasonable cost that they are entering the sphere of real
production processes."

STEREOLITHOGRAPHY OF PZT CERAMIC SUSPENSIONS
"Thanks to these improvements, PZT ceramics/polymer composites
dedicated to transducers and medical imaging applications have been
fabricated."

DEVELOPMENT OF INSOLUBLE NEUTRON ABSORBERS
SYSTEM FOR THE DISPOSITION OF DOE-SNF [CANNISTERS]
"The proposal ... intends to develop neutron absorber-doped structural
materials systems by combining powder metallurgy processing and
Net-Shape/Near Net-Shape fabrication technology ..."

IN-SITU RAPID SPARES MANUFACTURING AND ITS
APPLICATION TO HUMAN SPACE MISSIONS
"In the perspective of a human mission to Mars ... the ability to
maintain systems will be a key issue and that spare parts might pose
some problems."

* Tooling
_________________________________________________

SECOND CHANCE FOR BROKEN TOOLS
"The technology allows tools to be repaired without welding, which
can cause flaws and warping in the tool."

RAPID SHEET METAL MANUFACTURING.
"The three indirect approaches use selective laser sintering (SLS),
stereolithography (SLA), and high-speed computer numerical
controlled (CNC) milling to build the masters from computer data
models. ... [Using] an alternative technique, metal forming tools are
fabricated directly ... via selective laser sintering."

* Electronics And Photonics

3-D PHOTONIC BANDGAP STRUCTURES IN THE MICROWAVE
REGIME BY FUSED DEPOSITION OF MULTIMATERIALS
"These PBG structures are potential candidates for applications in
advanced communication systems."

DIRECT WRITE MICROBATTERIES FOR NEXT-GENERATION
MICROELECTRONIC DEVICES
"Microbatteries and integrated microbattery systems are likely to be the
sole power source or a power-source component for the next
generation of microelectronic devices."

DIRECT-WRITE PROCESSES AS ENABLING TOOLS FOR
NOVEL ANTENNA DEVELOPMENT
"Significant research effort is regularly applied to the goal of reducing
the size of radio-frequency antennas while maintaining the entire set of
positive attributes of proven but relatively large antennas."

FABRICATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC CRYSTALS WITH A
COMPLETE DIAMOND STRUCTURE BY
STEREOLITHOGRAPHY
"Three-dimensional electromagnetic or photonic crystals ... with a
diamond structure were designed to reflect electromagnetic waves by
forming an electromagnetic bandgap in the GHz range."

* Engineering And Design Applications
_________________________________________________

RAPID PROTOTYPING MODELS FOR WIND-TUNNEL TESTING.
"... rapid prototyping can provide a fast way of getting wind-tunnel
models. The team designed a lifting-body airplane and needed to test
its aerodynamics before building a full-sized flying model."

INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURE OF IMPULSE TURBINE BLADES
FOR WAVE ENERGY POWER CONVERSION
"These blades were designed and manufactured by the Wave Energy
Research Team (WERT) at the University of Limerick for the
experimental analysis of a 0.6 m impulse turbine with fixed guide
vanes for wave energy power conversion."

THE USE OF RAPID PROTOTYPING FOR ARCHITECTURAL
CONCEPT MODELLING
"Students have been using this technology for nearly 3 years now and
the demand for models and the range and complexity of the models is
ever increasing."

* Medicine And Anthropology
_________________________________________________

RECONSTRUCTING THE GRAUBALLE MAN: A DANISH BOG
BODY, CAT-SCAN AND 3-D VISUALISATION.
"... these results have given us new information on the bone fractures,
soft-tissue wounds, age-determination, and ultimately the creation a
stereolithographic model of the skull."

MECHANICAL DESIGN OF A SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY
ACTUATED PROSTHETIC HAND.
"The use of Shape Memory Alloy actuators combined with the rapid
fabrication of the non-assembly type hand, reduce considerably its
weight and fabrication time."

PROSTHETIC SOCKETS FABRICATION USING RAPID
PROTOTYPING TECHNOLOGY
"The traditional way of making a prosthetic socket ... is extremely
labour intensive, and it usually takes two to three days to make one
socket. ...Rapid Prototyping technology... reduces the socket making
time from days to less than 4 hours."

FLEXIBLE TUBULAR REPLICAS OF ABDOMINAL AORTIC
ANEURYSMS
"The study has shown that conventional rapid prototyping technology
can be used to manufacture flexible, radiolucent replicas which provide
a realistic training environment for endovascular procedures."

APPLICATION OF STEREOLITHOGRAPHY FOR SCAFFOLD
FABRICATION FOR TISSUE ENGINEERED HEART VALVES
"To recreate the complex anatomic structure ... we have used
stereolithographic models derived from x-ray computed tomography
...to generate biocompatible and biodegradable heart valve scaffolds..."

CAPILLARY FORMATION IN MICROFABRICATED POLYMER
SCAFFOLDS
"In this work, microfabrication technology is demonstrated as an
approach for organizing ... cells in vitro at the size scale of the
microcirculation."

CELL-BY-CELL CONSTRUCTION OF LIVING TISSUE
"We have developed a novel technique that actually engineers tissue,
not scaffolding ... This approach uses a laser-based rapid prototyping
system ...to construct living tissue cell-by-cell."

* Miscellaneous RP Technology
_________________________________________________

SUBMICRON STEREOLITHOGRAPHY FOR THE PRODUCTION
OF FREELY MOVABLE MECHANISMS BY USING SINGLE-
PHOTON POLYMERIZATION
"This system takes advantages of pinpoint solidification generated at a
tightly focused spot inside a liquid photopolymer."

RAPID PROTOTYPING AT TINY SCALES BY ROBOCASTING.
"The researchers have ... made inks from silica, alumina, lead zirconate
titanate (PZT), and hydroxyapatite (a component of human bone).
Typically, it possible to sculpt features as fine as 100 micrometers."

RAPID FREEZE PROTOTYPING RESEARCH GETS NSF
FUNDING.
"... investigates the feasibility of the method for fabricating molds for

would not only be faster, but cleaner ... [and] because water is cheaper
than photopolymers and other RP materials, the process is potentially
less expensive than traditional RP."
