Think I'll just stop eating grapes again. Next time you look at ANY medical text, remember how that information was obtained. Do we avoid using information based on its origin. As far as guilt you feel when you use this data, just keep in mind that the death penalty came BEFORE his participation in the project. Truth be told, I don't even see a road in this case.

I would like to take a moment to raise an important issue in regards to the posts from time to time that call for the use of human scan data. Invariably the thread will lead in a meaningful way to the possible use of the National Library of Medicines Visible Human Data Set. As such I would like to take a brief moment and step up on the soap box and make a short little statement.

I would encourage anyone on moral grounds not to be involved with data acquired from the Visible Human Project. It was aquired from a convicted felon on death row who was scanned before his execution and then after his execution frozen and physically sliced into thousands of micortome layers. The use of prisoners in this fashion is a dangerous road to take even one step down.

On a personal note I used this data myself once and still feel guilty about doing so to this day. Please join me in refraining from participating in this sort of human rights abuse.

Ok thats all; I'll step down from my box and hope that my message made its mark.

  Sincerely

    Hello Jim,

If you are looking to purchase ready-made files I would contact Visible
Productions in Ft. Collins, CO. They do great work and have compiled
their database of human anatomy from the visible human project and other
studies. They can also give you the file in many different formats to
suit your needs. I believe that they are also the ones providing some
of the anat! omical data you can purchase from Viewpoint Datalabs
    (http://www.viewpoint.com/medical/). Contact them at www.visiblep.com.
These guys are definitely experts and have spent much time making the
models "prettier" than what you'd be able to pull out of the visible
    human yourself.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andy

    Richard,
Thanks for your suggestion. We've actually connected with Hugo. I think
Visual Human Project and Hugo are one and the same. The sight and the
data is cumbersome and somewhat inadequ! ate. Not to say we lack a lot of
experience in pulling out specific body parts. We're still novices and
    I'm searching for alternatives.

    Many thanks,
    Jim Williams

    Dear Jim and list,

If you do a web search I guess you may find people who have 3D files of
various body parts, usually bones and joints but other stuff too. The
alternative is to get access to the Visual Human Project. It contains CT
and MRI data of two whole people. There are conditions that apply and
you have to register to get access but once you do you can theoretically
    create any bits you want.

    regards,
    Richard
