One possible way around this is to use a stock 'unwrapped' image of the
globe (easy enough to scan out of any atlas) and then use this as a bump map
on a standard sphere/geosphere object - ensuring of course that the
sphere/geosphere mesh is set fine enough. You could could do this in 1 bit
mode to get just the continents, or if your atlas image contains pseudo
contour information by colour produce a more interesting model

RE:
I'm looking for an STL or CAD file of the globe (ie. planet earth). Doesn't
have to be particularly detailed - as long as it has got the continents.
 
I will even accept those misguided upside down versions with Australia "down
under" .
 
I know I can get one from viewpoint.com but I aint got the bucks!
 
Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
