using stl file for tool path generation

we read @ theuse of .stl file (generated using I-DEAS) for the purpose of tool path generation

on CNC machine.

we are facing some problems:

1) why .stl file would be more suitable for tool path generation

2) what approach does the softwares available in market use for the tool path generation

what would be their limitations, which forcing to use .stl file for tool path generation ?

3) weather idea is about to use .stl file generated once or to make the slices of the part model

and then use the data at each slice surface?
