Dear Chang,

I am not an expert to comment on the questions (1) and (2) you have listed
below. However, regarding question (3), I can comment.

STL files generated from CAD software can be manipulated by other software.
If you have SolidWorks, you can try out STL Import for SolidWorks
(http://www.fpsols.com/stl_import_sw.html) to import a STL model into
SolidWorks directly as a solid. You can then perform all sorts of operations
on the imported model, as you would on any SolidWorks part document.

Just last week, we released MeshWorks for Rhino
(http://www.fpsols.com/meshworks_rh.html), which provides useful mesh
manipulation utilities such as hollowing, stitching, filling holes, etc.
Rhino already has a STL import/export interface. So if you have Rhino, you
can use it to manipulate STL meshes among other kinds of meshes.

Hope this helps.
