Maybe not "more accurate", but you could get a very accurate size with
a digicam by measuring one easily identifiable dimension of the
original with calipers, taking the biggest possible picture, and then
scaling the image so that dimension is correct.
You'd also have to be careful that the camera was perfectly normal to
the piece plane, but that shouldn't be difficult with a tripod.
It should be possible to completely eliminate reflection with a
thorough paint job and shadowless lighting.
