I was the software manager at 3D Systems when we put the 1989 specification
together. Carl is correct. STL is an abbreviation for Stereolithography.

"The software generates a tessellated object description known as an STL or
STereoLithography file"
Please see Page 4 "Stereolithography and Other RP&M Technologies" by Paul
Jacobs

I believe it is also described in the "Fundamentals of Sterolithography" but
I can't reference that as I have loaned it out at present.

I hope this puts it to rest.

Perhaps if we knew the originator of the abbreviation it may help shed some
light. Whoever he/she is, if they have been reading
the responses on this list they must be having a good old laugh.

>From Materialise Reference Manual p. 1-10 says, "STL is the abbreviation
of Standard Triangulation Language". Then Sterolithography and other RP&M
Technologies from Rapid Prototyping to Rapid Tooling, by Paul F. Jacobs,
Phd, on page 4 says, " The software generates a tessellated object
description known as an STL or STereoLithography file." So I'll stick with
answering ?????
