this may have already been said, but in our experience, vacuum metallizing
is great for prototyping. it's not as durable as electroplating, but if
looks-like is what you're after and you have a substrate that won't take
electroplating (abs will, in it's natural state), then you don't have any
other choices that i know of.

I did some research on chromeplating of ABS parts about a year back. The
degree of peeling was slightly in excess of our tolerance, but we were
looking for a hard depost layer (>50 microns). If you are planning
electro-chrome as an option, this will definitely be a concern.

We found that once the ABS substrate was coated with any thing, it was not
possible to perform nickel-plating (as a pre-cursor to chrome) by the
butyl-sacrificial method. If your tolerances are loose, you could try
metalizing with silver-loaded paint prior to the chrome plate.

N.B. - I'm back on the list after a looooong time now, so "hi!" to all out
there. Good to see the community still going strong!

Peter

Hello All,

When a FDM-ABS part is sealed with a solution like thinner, MEK or else;
can it still be metalized/chromed. Anyone out there with some experience in
this? Something else we should take care of?

Thanks in advance, and have a nice week-end (and let your RP-machines do
the work these days offcourse!)

Kind regards,
