Rapid prototyping is a system to produce a physical model or part of a virtual model or part.

You could narrow the definition to: Rapid prototyping is a system to produce a physical part from virtual model, usually a computer based 3 dimensional representation of the physical part.

Rapid Prototyping is a means to getting to a solution quickly. The system you use to get there is governed by what you are going to do with the physical model, the equipment you have, how much you want to pay and how quickly is quick.

Paper scissors and Styrofoam can work for one while a CNC part is required for another.
