NEW METAPOR® MICRO POROUS ALUMINUM MATERIALS

STUDIO CITY, CALIFORNIA: October 11, 2000: PORTEC - North America, a
division of NEST Technologies, Inc., announced the availability of three
new grades of METAPOR air permeable micro porous aluminum material.
Since its initial introduction in 1996, METAPOR BF 100 AL has gained
popularity in a range of application areas such as porous tooling for
thermoforming, vacuum clamping systems for material handling, and air
cushion devices for conveying and automation systems.

All METAPOR block products are based on the proprietary formulation of
aluminum powder and epoxy binder. A patented manufacturing process is
capable of producing large micro porous blocks with sizes of 20” x 20” x
16”. These large blocks are then cut into plates with a range of
standard thickness. Numerous plates are often joined together with an
adhesive to construct large METAPOR assemblies.

METAPOR block materials are easily machined without affecting the air
permeability of the product. For optimum surface finish, polishing with
fine sanding papers and grinding is recommended.

The original METAPOR BF 100 AL material offers the following specific
benefits for applications in plastic thermoforming:

- Elimination of the need to drill tiny vacuum holes
- Ability to produce parts with extreme level of detail and complexity
- Better part definition, accuracy, and flatness
- Improved surface quality
- Faster air evaluation

For vacuum clamping systems and air cushion devices, METAPOR BF 100 AL
offers even pressure for partially covered surfaces enabling accurate
clamping of delicate films and parts, as well as creating even air film
on the surface for conveying and air bearing applications.

The following three new METAPOR products have been introduced in order
to expand the range of applications in the existing market segments and
to develop new application areas:

METAPOR HD 100 AL - High Density Material

This product has been specifically developed for applications requiring
high surface finish. METAPOR HD 100 AL can be polished, making it
suitable as tooling for thermoforming transparent components and highly
cosmetic parts.

METAPOR BF 210 AL - High Temperature Material

This product can be continuously operated at temperatures of up to 410
°F. METAPOR BF 210 AL is suitable as tooling for thermoforming high
temperature plastic materials such as polycarbonate, polyethylene, and
other exotic plastics. This product can also be used to make vacuum
clamping devices for holding inserts in a compression molding process.

METAPOR MACRO - Highly Porous Material

This product has been developed for applications requiring high level of
airflow. As compared to METAPOR BF 100 AL, METAPOR MACRO is over 10
times more air permeable. METAPOR MACRO is used in vacuum clamping
applications where the clamping area is fully covered.

Thermoforming applications for METAPOR include production of packaging
for consumer, medical, food, and electronics products, trays for part
transportation, components for medical equipment, industrial machinery,
and interiors of automotive and aerospace vehicles.

Vacuum clamping & air cushion applications include processing systems
for glass sheets, electronic circuits, semi-conductor components, film,
paper and foil converting, as well as many other industrial automation
systems.
