MASTERS TRAINING PACKAGES IN RAPID PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
FACULTY OF COMPUTING SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING
Leicester
Background
The new area of Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing represents one of the
most significant advances in the approach to design and manufacturing. Aimed
at both professional engineers and recent graduates, De Montfort
University's new MSc in Rapid Product Development has been set up to address
the industry shortage of knowledge and understanding of Rapid Prototyping
and its associated technologies. The unique design of the course delivers
modules comprising one week intensive teaching and participation methods,
supplemented by distance learning techniques. This will allow engineers and
designers from a variety of backgrounds to participate.
Funding:
Sponsorship money of over £6500 plus full payment of fees per full-time
student will be available from the Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council (EPSRC). In addition, a number of leading companies are
seeking to fund these candidates with further money up to £10,000 through
the course. This means that successful candidates will enjoy a generous
income while furthering their education and working alongside engineers and
designers from a variety of industrial backgrounds.
Structure of the Course:
The Full Time study mode uses three consecutive weeks for each module as
detailed below:
* 1st week - Students receive pre-study material; this material must
be read to provide a solid base of understanding of the subject matter.
* 2nd week - Intensive contact week involves a combination of teaching
methods including lectures/seminars/practical classes and guest speakers. An
assessment worth 40% of the course mark is taken during the intensive
contact week; this may take the form of laboratory exercises or a written
examination.
* 3rd week - At the end of the intensive contact week students are set
a written assignment comprising 60% of the mark for the course. The
assignment must be completed within a week.
Four modules are completed during the first semester (September to January)
with a further four completed in the second semester (January to May). The
project is carried out in the summer semester (May to September) and this
may be performed either at the Leicester site or at a sponsoring company or
at both.
Applications:
You are invited to apply for a place on the course if you have a degree 2:2
or above in a relevant subject or industrial experience sufficient to earn
equivalent experiential learning.
