We have had the same problems. We have had some success with STEP files.
Solidview has an option to read Catia model files and works very well.

  Dear list,

We are having problems bringing a Catia file into Solidworks. The file
does not always come through as a solid.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
