I had a class that covered this topic several years ago... I don't have my
notes in font of me but it seems like....
Photoelasticity is a characteristic of certain materials (usually
transparent materials like plastics) and is related to compression of the
object and a phenonema called birefringence.
Basically, the stress in a part can be determined using phototelasticity.
