Hello Mark,

Pick your poison.. If functionality is very important then surface
finish may become secondary. If all typical product attributes are
required (form, fit, finish and function) often (at least in plastic
molding) actual injection molded prototypes may be the best solution.

For my money I choose SLS for functionality and SLA for surface finish.
Where I need to combine robust performance (aka functionality) with
appearance we usually, assuming there are no casting resins capable of
equaling required performance, will finish the SLS Duraform to the
required surface quality. That may require urethane impregnation and
painting to specified color. It certainly is more involved to finish an
SLS then an SLA, but what you end up with is high performance RP
manufactured prototype.

Subject: Surface finish - Comparisons and Importance

Dear All

No.1
What is the surface finish like on parts made from DuraForm(TM)
Polyamide
and DuraForm GF - compared with other technologies/materials?

No.2
Does any body else agree that surface quality is not the be all and end
all?
ie.......... how good does it need to be?

Best Regards

Mark
