EVA FORUM

From: Elaine Hunt (ehunt@ces.clemson.edu)
Date: Wed Nov 03 1999 - 21:05:10 EET

The Department of Bioengineering and the Clemson Apparel Research Center, in
collaboration with the EVA Project Office at the NASA Johnson Space Center, is
sponsoring an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Technology Forum which will be held
at Clemson University on November 9-10, 1999. The focus of “EVA Technology: A
Leap into the Future,” will be on advanced materials and technologies that have
been identified for the next generation spacesuit. Attendees will enjoy an
interactive format designed to encourage dialogue among a broad spectrum of
industry, government, and academic scientists and engineers with diverse
backgrounds and perspectives.
One specific area of interest is spacesuit design for Mars exploration.
Protection of astronauts from extreme temperatures and radiation in the space
environment has been provided in the past using multi-layer insulation in
ultra-high vacuum environments of low earth orbit and the lunar surface.
Current EVA systems are not effective in planetary environments with residual
gas atmospheres such as Mars, with ambient pressures between 8 to 14 mbar.
New applications must be lightweight, minimize consumables, provide for
planetary surface mobility as well as simple maintainability, and supply high
reliability over long duration missions. Technologies include a surface
mobility suit, portable life support system, dust and radiation protection, and
thermal protective garments that meet mission reliability requirements for
surface stays on the order of 500 days. EVA surface transport systems (i.e.,
rovers and robots) are also important.
