Jim et al,
        You are only partially right that the output from the scnners is point cloud.
INfact, most scanners will actually produce a triangulated mesh, which in most
cases is topologically correct. So you have sliughtly higher level of geometry -
from just point cloud data.
        Therefore for First article inspection, you are not manipulating the geoemtry,
You dont have to fit a NURB surface(s) to your part to compare the dimensions. This
howevr assuming that the scanning error is minimal. So I dont think you are ahead of the
technology. YOu just have to use it in a smart manner :)
