Greetings:

Dr. John Gill of B F Goodrich Aerospace has the following requirement:

quickly determine the dimensions of individual pieces and the mechanical
operation of an articulated object which may be connected using standard
roller bearings, ball and cup joints, sliding surfaces and shock absorption
gear. The goal is to be able to determine the dimensions of an individual
piece, specify how it's connected to the next piece, dimension that one and
move on throughout the structure (or cavity). It must be able to render a
CAD drawing of the object under study based on the dimensions and
connectivity specified during data capture. Do not want to specify the
accuracy or precision needed at this time, but the requirements will
probably not push the state of the technology. The vision is one of having
a "wand" which an engineer can use to touch the locations of critical
corners, edges, centerlines, etc., in order to specify the locations,
orientation and relationship of the pieces. The need is to have a CAD
drawing rendered which will then allow the enhancement of the existing
design with "add-on" components that do not interfer with normal
operation/range of motion. Objects under study may occupy a volume of up
to 200 cubic feet (5x4x10 feet). The device must be man-portable, battery
powered and linkable to a laptop.
