Al,

We sell the CySlice software, so my comments are a little biased.....

I've used CySlice extensively and have been very impressed with it --in fact
its as good as any tool I've seen for this purpose. It can import models in
.stl, .obj, or .ply (this is Stanford ply format, a polygon format develped
at Stanford and used by Cyberware scanners).

Its then possible to draw section cuts or make parrallel cuts. A nice
feature is that you can "draw" a b-spline along a feature and then create
slices perpendicular to the b-spline-- very useful for lofting surfaces.
Its also very easy to "hide" parts of the model your not concerned with.

You have good control over the b-splines you are exporting --the number of
control points, control point spacing, etc. We use CySlice for slicing and
FormZ for surfacing with good results. Since we are a scanning service
bureau we often scan parts and export slices to folks using such programs as
Alias, MasterCam, Unigraphics, SDRC Ideas etc., without problems.

About the only drawback to CySlice is that it only does one thing - slicing
and exporting data.

It costs $4,000 and runs only on SGI now, but a beta version is running on
NT and likely will ship by February (I'm told). Its also sold as a plug-in
for Alias for $2,000.
