Jeffrey,

Your problem is very familiar to me.
I always have about the factor 2 between lowest and highest offer when I
call for tender.
The reason: Sure there are cost formulas based on scan time and
recoating/leveling which are quite accurate, but as a prototype is a
"one-off" - product, each service provider has his specific way to calculate
the manual finshing after the building of a part.

In my special case, I have even a SB that returns with "we are not able to
serve your needs", because they have largely understimated the effort to
finish and assemble a very complex connector structure in a former project.

In short: apply a formula like "price = factor1 x part volume + factor2 x
build_height" which you can assemble by analysing your - say - last 10
projects, but dont expect to have a more clarified situation thereafter.

Juergen

Subject: sls quotes

Dear list

I have recently been asked to obtain quotes for SLS prototyped parts. I have
found that the quoted prices can vary across the board. Unfortunately, since
I am from a large company, my purchasing department wants an +accurate+
estimate of the cost before quoting. I need to be able to +guess+ at the
cost before starting the process. To date, I have been unable to figure out
any reliable method of estimating SLS part costs. Does anyone on the list
know the general method used to quote SLS parts by the industry. Are they
basing costs on:

1. Part volume or bounding box and a cost per cubic inch.
2. Part height and a build rate per hour
3. Some other method ¦.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
