The short answer is yes, laser scanning systems are being used for
inspection.
Some of the reasons for using laser scanners are:
- faster data acquisition
- less path planning requirements (faster inspection times)
- non-contact measurment.
- application programs such as Imageware's Surfacer and Innovmetric's
Rapid Inspection module are suited to processing laser scanner data, and
providing fast inspection feedback.
However, laser scanners have their limitations which may include:
- optical sensors are sometimes less accurate than contact sensors (this
can be partially offset by "averaging" the substantially more dense data
available from scanning systems
- laser scanning systems may not be able to measure (see) all features
requiring inspection.
