Elaine,
To paraphrase an eloquent haiku...
100% knowledge,
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.
Is it ever possible to know 100% about anything?

As Bill Richards said, constructing at the atomic level is where we
have to go if we are serious about the other 90%. At the present time,
that technology exists in many forms, but none of them are "rapid".
Assuming that adaptive prototyping will never be as fast as dedicated
production manufacturing, I can envision a process that would allow
you to construct the prototype exactly like the production part...
Just use, solidification modeling to define grain structure and
crystal growth in molded/cast parts, fluid flow for mold filling,
deformation analysis to predict stamping, machining, and upset forming
stresses, all used to map the atomic/molecular orientation of the
desired part created by this prototyping machine...
I'll coin a new term:
"Manufacturing Process Prototyping"

By the way Bill, I already work for someone who says..."Make It So!"

If RP "experts" know only 10% of what could be know about RP&M, how long
will it take us to know the other 90%? Where are we looking for this other
90% of knowledge? What will RP&M look like when we know the other 90%?
