surface colour for parts

I am interested in hearing from anyone developing or selling systems
to create a coloured object under computer control.

The scenario:
- start with a coloured model of a part (perhaps from a colour scan)
- create a limited series of reproductions of the part (RP or other
technology)
- apply a surface colouring under computer control
- appply a coating to protect the colour (if required)

For example, one might create a sculpture of a fish, complete with
coloured scales.
