Have you looked into spray metal material application (e.g. arc spray)?

If the surfaces are properly prepared (bead blasted and clean) the bond strength is very good, especially if the sprayed on material is similar to the base material.
This may not hold up very long on a rubber pad press depending on the die geometry (i.e. closed versus open angles, etc.) but it might be worth a try - depending how many "hits" you are expecting. A bladder-type press (Asea) would be a lot easier on your filler material. We've used spray metal to fix a number of aluminum layup molds (which undergo a lot of thermal cycling) and it's a quick and easy fix that holds up very well.
