Pentium Upgrades to SLA 500

Has anyone out there upgraded their SLA 500 from a 486 to a Pentium 100 or
better processor without buying the upgrade from 3D Systems? I understand
there are compatability and communication issues between the controller and
the various hardware boards. Is it possible to set up a controller using
the info from an existing 3D Pentium 100? What is it that makes the
motherboard uniquely set up to work as an SLA 500 controller,(hardware or
configuration)?

Thank you,
Mark C. Davis
