Q. on layer thickness on FDM & building cylinders

Hi All,
I am working on developing a software tool to help a user
optimize the surface finish on a part to be built on a FDM RP m/c by
choosing proper orientation. I would like your thoughts on the following
2 questions:

1. what is the layer thickness that RP users most frequently use on the FDM
(ofcourse it depends on the application & surface detail required)?

2. How can I quantify that cylindrical surfaces are best built in
vertical direction as compared to horizontal direction (cylindricity &
surface roughness?) ? If not, please specify why.

Thanks for your time.
