When I bought my Dec Alpha XL300 (266MHz) last October to use with Pro/E,
the benchmarks that we ran showed a 300% faster regeneration time vs. SGI
150 MHz. The Alpha was running Windows NT 4.0 and the SGI was running Irix
5.3.
I was told then by 3D Systems (Product Marketing Manager) that Maestro would be
ready for Windows NT in a year. I have recently been told they haven't started
on this yet.
The big question is how fast would parts slice on the different, faster, cheaper
hardware. I recently priced a Dec Alpha 533 MHz for under $8,000. Pentium II's
are also looking pretty fast in the $5,000 -6,500 range.

Hello, all -
We have two SGI Indigo 2 machines.
1) 250 MHz w/ 128 MB RAM running Irix 6.2
2) 150 MHz w/ 128 MB RAM running Irix 5.3
Both are running Maestro 1.8, as we haven't received 1.9 yet.
We have been slicing some parts for 2 days now, each part being about 17 MB
.stl, and each part almost identical to the other. The parts are complex
in the sense that they each have over 100 posts about .250" in diameter
that are attached to a plane with .100" rounds.
Here's the issue: The 250 MHz machine is taking 20 minutes/layer to slice,
and the 150 MHz is taking 6 - 8 minutes/layer. My hunch is that Maestro
1.8 doesn't run so well on Irix 6.2.
Can anybody comment on your experiences with this?
