SME BOOK EXPLORES RAPID PROTOTYPING APPLICATIONS IN THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY
        DEARBORN, Mich. -- October 21, 1997 -- Rapid Prototyping: A Unique
Approach to Diagnosis and Planning of Medical Procedures, one of the
first publications of its kind in the world, is now available from the
Rapid Prototyping Association of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
(RPA/SME).
Through case studies, this 200-page, soft-cover book documents how the
medical industry applies rapid prototyping. Written by Dr. Kevin
McAloon of Zeneca Specialties, it covers key technologies that support
medical modeling, uses and benefits of medical models and a database of
case studies.
The publication is designed for medical practitioners, including
orthopedic, neuro and dental surgeons and radiologists as well as
teaching hospitals, universities and libraries. There are photographs
of many medical models illustrating the shape, orientation, relative
location and size of internal anatomical structures for diagnosis,
operation planning, design of implants, external prostheses, surgical
templates, and communication and teaching aids. In the manufacturing
community, the publication includes information for implant and
prostheses companies, service bureaus, software vendors, materials
suppliers and scanning and imaging companies.
Dr. McAloon explains that pioneering work is currently ongoing in
Europe, the United States, Australia, and Japan where RP models have
been used by maxillofacial, craniofacial, cranioimplant, neuro, spinal
and pelvic surgeons.

Dr. McAloon is a technology manager with Zeneca, an international
company specializing in supplying products and services to the medical
market. He joined the company in 1993 where he manages a team
responsible for the development of new materials, including selectively
colorable resins for RPT. Dr. McAloon has contributed to several
publications on stereolithography.
Rapid Prototyping: A Unique Approach to Diagnosis and Planning of
Medical Procedures is $99 ($95 for SME members) and available by
