The Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of
Standards and Technology is pleased to invite you to participate in a
1.5-day workshop entitled,

"Knowledge-Based Interoperability: Standards and Implementation Issues,"

scheduled for 3 and 4 November 1997 on the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, MD.
Details about the workshop (goals, format, registration ($80) and general
information) may be viewed at the URL below:

http://www.mel.nist.gov/msidevent/workshop/kbi97.

To encourage effective communication among participants, the workshop
attendance will be limited to ~40. We anticipate the format of the
workshop to be 1/2 day presentations, and one day working in smaller groups
(breakout sessions) discussing the issues.

We expect outcomes from this workshop to include workshop proceedings, the
identification of issues for KBI (the need for standards, functional and
requirements for KBS, cultural and business implications), the
identification of working group(s) on developing standards, and a
continuing, online dialog of issues.

We invite you to participate in this workshop and to hear your views and
suggestions for improvements and future research. A few speaker slots (for
KBS developers and users) are yet available; if you are interested in
making a presentation, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
