This Month in the Rapid Prototyping Report -- August 1997

**Have you ever wondered how companies test medical drug delivery devices.
This month we visit the 3M Company and find out how it is using
stereolithography to develop working models of a human lung.

**Z Corporation of Somerville, Massachusetts is now shipping commercial
units of its Z402 rapid prototyping system. Z Corp's technology is based on
M.I.T.'s three-dimensional printing. According to Z Corporation, the Z402
builds parts ten to 20 times faster than some competing concept modelers
and the parts it builds are ten to 20 times cheaper!

**Ciba Geigy and Allied Signal have both introduced improved resins for
stereolithography. Ciba's SL-5410 delivers about 50 percent greater tensile
strength and about 15 percent high elastic modulus compared to SL-5180.
Allied Signal's Exactomer HTG is a high-temperature resin with a Tg of
125ºC.

**The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
has developed a soft-elastomer (72 Shore A) for use with Stratasys fused
deposition modeling systems.

**Stratasys introduces a complete FDM package -- ABSolute ABS that includes
an FDM-1650, Quickslice software, and ABS material for $99,000.

**Highlights of the Sixth European Conference on Rapid Prototyping and
Manufacturing -- features such topics as adaptive slicing, improved
stereolithography resins, an update on three-dimensional welding, and
techniques for improving surface finish on stereolithography models.
