Subject: RPA Spearheads CAD Initiative

The Rapid Prototyping Association of the Society of Manufacturing
Engineers (RPA/SME) is in the process of initiating a link between the
Rapid Prototyping (RP) industry and the Computer Aided Design (CAD)
industry to facilitate constructive communication between the developers
of CAD solid modeling software and the manufacturers and users of RP
machines. As a member of this community, your active participation is
encouraged.

"At some point, most users of RP machines have experienced problems
related to the translation and verification of .stl files from part
files generated by commercially available CAD solid modeling software"
says Clint Atwood, RPA/SME Chairman. "When these problems arise,
typically your only recourse has been to seek help 'on your own' from
the software company or other RP users. As the RP industry has grown
the number of users and associated CAD interface problems have also
grown." A primary ingredient of the RP market has been the efficient
utilization of technology in an effort to compress time. The current
interface problems are a major inhibitor to this process.

The RPA/SME recognizes the need to link members of these two industries
to facilitate change and growth. To achieve this dialog, the RPA/SME
has established a CAD Initiative which will enlist the support of both
industries. The first step is to identify RP related problems with the
major CAD solid modeling software tools. This information will be
collated, summarized and provided to the CAD developers. Then a team of
people from the various software vendors, RP machine manufacturers, and
RP Users will come together to address the RP/CAD issues identified and
make recommendations for change and support.

As stated, the purpose of this project is simply to establish
constructive dialogue between the two industries for the betterment of
both.

This CAD Initiative is led by Larry E. Andre' Sr., Vice President of
Solidiform, Inc., and member of the RPA/SME Board of Advisors, with
support from Kristen Dudash, RPA/SME Association Manager, and the
RPA/SME Board.

For more information on this very important industry project please
contact Kristen Dudash, Manager, RPA/SME at 313-271-1500 ext. 532,
e-mail: dudakri@sme.org or Larry Andre' at e-mail: landre@solidiform.com

During AUTOFACT '97, in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the CAD Initiative
Vendor Panel will include discussions between the RP and CAD
communities. This event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. , Wednesday,
November 5, at Cobo Center.
