Wilmington, DE (USA), July 1, 1997 -- The DuPont Company today announced the new
Somos(R) 7100 series of epoxy resins for stereolithography that is water
resistant and has a high heat-deflection temperature. The first member of the
series, "Somos" 7100 is for use in Argon-ion UV laser stereolithography systems
such as 3D Systems SLA-500, EOS STEREOS MAX 600, EOS STEREOS MAX 400, Aaroflex
Solid Imager and Teijin Seiki SOLIFORM. A third generation epoxy, the "Somos"
7100 series was created to tolerate a wide range of humidity conditions during
and after build and to eliminate bubble formation.
The strong, rigid, highly accurate and water resistant "Somos" 7100 parts,
post-cured by heat, achieve high heat deflection temperatures greater than 100
degrees Celcius, elongation as low as 5% and impact strength of 0.55 Ft-lb/in.
"Somos" 7100 Series of epoxy resins will be compatible with all known secondary
processes, including silicone rubber moldings, vacuum casting and short run
injection molding.
Users of the new resin will notice a substantial improvement in down-facing
surfaces and overall improved part quality. Many of these features are
attributed to the research and development efforts made to optimize the
viscosity. Fewer structural supports are required, bubbles have been eliminated
and undistorted walls are thinner. Not only has product quality increased, but
productivity has further improved with faster photospeeds and shorter delays
compared to current epoxies.

"Somos" resins for stereolithography have been optimized for Argon-ion,
Helium-Cadmium, and solid state UV laser systems, and range from the only
available flexible resins ("Somos" 2100 Series), to general purpose highly
transparent acrylate resins ("Somos" 3100 Series), second generation epoxy
resins ("Somos" 6100 Series) and now a third generation of epoxy resins ("Somos"
7100 Series). DuPont also provides powders for selective laser sintering, such
as the flexible elastomer powder "Somos" 201, now available from DTM
Corporation.
