As has been mentioned, you can use my ADMesh program to convert an STL
file to VRML, then use any VRML viewer to view it. ADMesh is absolutely
FREE, it's not crippled. It will run on any UNIX system and even
Microsoft operating systems with a bit of fiddling. It is normally
distributed in source form, but I happen to have an IRIX binary. You can
get the IRIX binary from:
