Innovative Manufacturing Centre

An Innovative Manufacturing Centre is being established in the above
department, sponsored by the European Commission and a number of
major industrial suppliers. The centre will help firms in the east
Midlands Objective 2 area to develop new products, provide advice,
consulting, training and technological assistance relating to
developing new products at minimum cost and in the shortest practical
time scales. The centre will have a number of `state-of-the-art'
computer aided design and manufacturing systems. These will include a
variety of rapid prototyping systems which firms will be able to use.
The centre is funded for an initial period of two years, but it is
expected to become self-supporting by the end of 1998

The following posts will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a
period of up to two years in the first instance.

CENTRE MANAGER

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day
running of the centre and duties will include: planning programmes for
companies, overseeing of technical projects, reporting progress to the
Centre's Management Board, and liaison with other providers of
technology within the area. Candidates should have a strong practical
background in technology applied to product development, managerial
experience and an understanding of the needs of smaller firms. The
salary will be in the range of stlg24,132 - stlg31,357 per annum, depending

SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEERS (TWO POSTS)
and
GRADUATE PROJECT ENGINEERS (TWO POSTS)

The Senior Project Engineers will be required to manage the Centre's
activities within their area of responsibility and to liaise with
companies in the area. This will include identifying the needs of
local businesses, offering consulting advice, running seminars,
providing in-company and in centre training. The Senior Project
Engineers will manage a small team of engineers and/or CAD/Rapid
Prototyping technicians. The Graduate Project Engineers will assist in
these tasks.

Post 1 and 2 - The successful candidates will be responsible for the
Management consulting and training. Experience in the following areas
will be an advantage: marketing of products/product promotion, product
strategies, concurrent engineering, design of manufacturing &
management systems, financial evaluation of product strategies,
Product Quality Positioning, JIT, Technology Management, ISO 9000,
Benchmarking, TQM.

Post 3 and 4 - The successful candidates will be responsible for CAD,
Rapid Prototyping, Rapid Tooling etc. Experience in the following
areas will be an advantage: design for manufacture, Finite Element
Analyses, mouldflow simulation, Unigraphics CAD/CAM,
Stereolithography, Laminated Object Manufacturing, Fused Deposition
Modelling, Vacuum Casting, Spray Metal Tooling.

Salary for the Senior Project Engineer will be within the range of
stlg16,628 - stlg21,519 per annum, depending on qualifications and
experience.

Salary for the Graduate Project Engineer will be within the range of
stlg14,317 - stlg21,519 per annum, depending on qualifications and
experience.

It is possible for the Project Engineers to be employed part time and
register for a Ph.D. in a related area within the University.

TECHNICIAN (THREE POSTS)

Mechanical technician required with experience of operating various
manufacturing equipment is necessary. Work and training of others in
Unigraphics CAD/CAM, Stereolithography, Laminated Object
Manufacturing, Fused Deposition Modelling, Vacuum Casting, Spray Metal
Tooling may be required. Training will be given as necessary.

Salary will be within the range stlg11,707 - stlg13,977 per annum, depending
on qualifications and experience.
