Tar is not an alternafive to gzip or pkzip. As a mattter of course, you
should be gzipping or pkzipping all your files, including tar files.
This is not only faster for downloading, it provides corruption detection.

1) gzip and tar are freely available for the PC. Why not provide a copy
on your ftp site for those in need?

2) gzip can read a pkzip archive containing one file, and there are free
pkzip compatible readers for unix, so a pkzip .zip file will also work for both
DOS/WIN/NT and Unix, if you put one file (a tar file?) in each .zip.
