Dear Gill,

you may have a look at http://rosebud.sdsc.edu/vrml/browsers.html.
There you will find a great summary of available VRML-Browsers sorted in
categories like platforms, VRML-Version etc.

An example for a *stand alone* VRML-Browser I personally know is VRweb,
which is a shareware tool available on almost all computer platforms.
