STEP -- is a standard under development for the transmission of product
data, including as a subset the
description of a mechanical products geometry. It is under development by
the ISO (International Standards Organization); the effort in the US is
coordinated, I believe, by the USPro organization (see
WWW link below). At the current stage of development the most active area
of use is the portion of
STEP known as AP203, which provides a standard way of transmitting solid
model geometry. Most of
the major CAD systems have translators allowing for reading and writing
STEP files (sometimes called
Part 21 files).

A hint: when doing electronic searches it is much more useful to search for
"ISO 10303", another
designation for the STEP standard, as opposed to the word "STEP"
