The process being developed by Los Alamos National Lab and several other
groups is basically an extension of the LayerGlaze process developed at
United Technologies Research Center by D.B. Snow, E.M. Breinan, B.K. Kear
and C.O. Brown in the early 1980's.

The objective of the LayerGlaze process was to buildup superalloy turbine
rotor hubs. This was a Rapid Solidification Process. The United
Technologies patent and publications also cover fabrication of free form
objects although this was not the focus of the work.

The LayerGlaze process is different than Selective Laser Sintering (SLS).
In SLS, the powder is in place before the laser beam energy is applied. In
LayerGlaze, the powder is added to a moving melt pool established by the
laser.
