Some processes create a solid model and then you slice,
some create a sliced model with a support.

Work at Clemson and the University of Kentucky started in 1990 and continues
today.  So you should find someone with the answers you need.   You might check
the Austin conference proceedings from last year about something that the
University of Michigan was also doing.  I can't remember just how far they
were in the process.
