Subject: RP name sum 1-23-95
Given that the entries in the RP new name game have dwindled, I will provide
the summary. My personal opinion is that nothing much was resolved. While most
people that sent in an entry seemed to prefer something other than RP, the
biggest single vote-getter was RP (with six votes, by my count). Holoform(ing)
got three votes. Solid Freeform Fabrication got 2 votes. And everything else
got one vote each.
Some of the rebel suggestions included:
Freeform Manufacturing
Freeform Fabrication
Rapid Freeform Fabrication
Additive Fabrication
Additive Freeform Manufacturing
Additive Freeform Fabrication
Additive Solid Freeform Manufacturing/Fabrication
Rapid Additive Freeform Fabrication
Stereo Additive Manufacturing/Fabrication
Hybridized Fabrication Process
Super Hybridized Fabrication Process
Automated Fabricators
Computer-Assisted Part Production
RePlication.
Other one-vote suggestions included some leftover names that I generally
associate with specific companies:
Solid Imaging (DuPont)
3D Printing (MIT/Soligen)
Stereolithography (3D Systems and others)
Light Sculpting (Light Sculpting Inc.).
Holoforming not only was one of the more interesting entries, but a few people
liked it so much they are already calling themselves holoformers. Two other
interesting entries were 3-D Kinko's, which one person uses to describe RP to
nontechnical people, and Reconstituted Virtual Reality, which the same person
uses to describe RP to "computer nerds." Some discussion of Santa Claus
machines and "my dream making machine" also took place, although I didn't take
these as entries.
The question now is, what do you want to do with it? A couple of people want a
real vote, one person/one vote (the list above represents multiple votes by
some people). Most people, especially those voting for RP, want to let it
rest, end of discussion for now, we are all the wiser, we are on to new
threads (wish list, etc.).
The technology roadmap I suggested earlier, if drawn from the comments above
is one that, I believe, will be lacking in information and fails to anticipate
many changes in the future global business environment. Desktop Prototyping,
Virtual Prototyping, Toolless Manufacturing, and Desktop Manufacturing are
four divergent highways I would add to the roadmap that could create dead ends
(sic) for stereolithography, for instance.
     Onward and upward?
