STEP
The correspondence on formats for layered manufacture has been  foreshadowed
by the EARP work written up in Data Exchange for Rapid Prototyping
which Andre Dolenc mentioned earlier and which is available.

There was much discussion about slicing which is summarized in the
document and as  Brindley says is not the whole answer. What about
orientation?

STEP
STEP is a Standard, or will be , for Exchange ie 2way transfer. It has
data models for facets,and other things which are available and represent
current state of understanding from accumulated wisdom.The use of the facetted
model is  demonstrated in the EARP document
And a possible slice rep.......

We intend to put the document on www and will let you know when we have.
